Mansion88 and 5050Poker Join Microgaming Poker Network

Online gaming software provider Microgaming has announced the addition of two more sites to its poker network, with both Asian-facing Mansion88.com and Malta-based 5050Poker.com joining the Microgaming Poker Network.

5050Poker is currently in the process of applying for an online gaming licence from Malta's Lottery & Gaming Authority and said that it is joining the network as a direct result of feedback from its players, who wanted to be on a network which would grow.

"Our players wanted the chance to play against a truly global opposition on a platform that offered improved game and tournament selection as well as greater liquidity," said Mattias Eriksson, CEO of 5050Poker.

"We listened to and acted on their demands and set about investigating a move to a software partner that would enable us to realise our ambitions for growth. Having thoroughly considered all available options, Microgaming was undoubtedly the best fit and we are convinced that operating within its Poker Network will prove a positive move for our player base.”

Licensed in First Cagayan Leisure & Resort Corporation in the Philippines, Mansion88 is a subsidiary of Gibraltar-based Mansion.com.

"Microgaming's excellent customer support and local presence made the decision to appoint them as our software provider very easy," said Mr Yong, Director of Mansion88 Poker. "By working together, I believe we can continue to raise our profile within the rapidly growing Asian markets; we look forward to a long and successful partnership."

Roger Raatgever, CEO Microgaming said: "We are delighted to be welcoming Mansion88 and 5050Poker to the Microgaming Poker Network and look forward to expanding our world class poker offering. Our ability to provide poker in more languages than any other network is crucial in helping our operators grow, and our partnership will enable both operators to cement their position as leading brands within their respective markets.”

According to figures from the online poker tracking site PokerScout, the Microgaming Poker Network is currently ranked eighth in the top poker networks in the world, behind the likes of Playtech's iPoker Network, PartyPoker and Ongame Network.

NEOVIA Financial Plc 2009 Second Quarter Trading Update

Friday, 7 August 2009 – NEOVIA Financial Plc ("NEOVIA" or the “Company”), (NEO.L), the independent online payments business, today provides the following update regarding trading during the first half of 2009.
Highlights
  • Group expects to report operating result in line with market forecasts for first half of 2009;
  • Quarter-on-quarter increase in active customers with 3% growth in second quarter 2009;
  • Quarter-on-quarter improvement in gross margins; and
  • Announcement of appointment of new CEO expected shortly.
Overall, the Group continued its promising start to 2009 with the second quarter on track despite the ongoing challenging economic conditions and the Board expects to report an operating result for the first six months of 2009 in line with market expectations. Nevertheless, the challenging market conditions experienced by the Group and other related companies in the first quarter of 2009 have continued into the second quarter, leading to a decrease, as anticipated, in revenues in the first half of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008.

Against this, the Group has seen a quarter-on-quarter increase in active customers, growing by 3% compared to Q1 2009. This is an encouraging trend considering both macro-economic conditions and the fact that the second quarter has traditionally exhibited slower growth than the first quarter. While gross margin in the first half of 2009 will be lower than the same period of 2008, the second quarter of 2009 will be ahead of the first quarter’s gross margin as the Group’s focus on cost control continues to show results. The Group’s results for the first six months of 2009 will reflect a number of non-recurring items which in total are expected to amount to approximately US$7 million.

The Board has identified a new Group Chief Executive Officer and expects to announce his appointment shortly. It is anticipated that he will join the Group in early September 2009.

Dale Johnson, Chairman of NEOVIA, commented: “The Board and management team remain focused on maximising revenues, maintaining control over costs, delivering a capital programme to support the strategy for the future, and preserving cash to deliver value for all shareholders. The Board continues to be optimistic about the outlook for NEOVIA for the full year, but is mindful of the ongoing external market conditions.”
The Company expects to publish its half year results for the six months ended 30 June 2009 in mid- September 2009.

Pot equity

Pot equity is your percentage chance of winning the pot at any given point in a hand. That percentage is the amount of equity you have in the pot or how much of the pot "belongs to you".

Here's a Texas Hold 'em example. You hold AsAh and you have a single opponent with what could be any hand. Your pot equity against a random hand is about 85%, meaning that if you both pushed all-in and the hand went to the showdown you can expect to win about 85% of the time. Notice that this is for a run all the way to the river with no strategy discussion and no chance of anyone folding to scare cards. The effect is the same as if both players agreed to check all the way. Pot equity does not tell you anything about numbers of bets you can expect to win.

You're not always up against a random hand, of course. If my opponent calls my raise with my AsAh above, I can start to put her on some hands which will eat away a bit at my pot equity.

You probably won't be figuring pot equity at the table. You'll mostly be figuring it after the fact when you wonder how good your AKs was against someone's ATo (answer 75%). Use a tool such as PokerStove for help in figuring your pot equity.

Pot equity has some use at the table. Primarily it lets you know how much of the pot "belongs to you," as mentioned above. When you know your equity, you can compare it to your "fair share" which is just the pot size divided by the number of people in the hand. So, when you start a hand with pocket aces and have three opponents, you know that your fair share is about 25% but your pot equity is around 85%. Therefore, all bets that go into the pot earn you more than your fair share. This is especially useful when you're trying to determine whether to check/call vs. bet/raise with a flush draw. If you have many players in, your pot equity (the chance you'll win the hand, which is directly related to you making the flush) vs. your fair share may warrant a bet/raise rather than a check/call. That is, every bet you put in and get called is, theoretically, extra money for you when your pot equity is higher than your fair share.

NEOVIA Enters Remittance Market with Launch of NETELLER Money Transfer Service for Instant Online Movement of Funds

Cost-effective global remittance increases choice for sending payment to friends and family

Tuesday, 28th July 2009 – NEOVIA Financial Plc (LSE: NEO), the independent global online payments business, announces its NETELLER Money Transfer service, that lets friends and family send and receive money instantly around the world securely through a user-friendly interface.

With no transfer fees for the receiver, the sender only pays a 1% transfer fee up to a maximum of $10 USD. This makes the NETELLER Money Transfer service one of the most cost effective methods available to consumers on the market.

The global remittance market is forecast to be in excess of $300billion this year, according to World Bank estimates. Senders can apply for a free NETELLER account and send money the same day to anyone with an email address. The service allows people to transfer funds in 20 different currencies to over 180 countries, where NETELLER offers a service. It has a wide variety of deposit options including credit/debit card, bank transfer, direct e-Banking, Giropay, iDEAL, and Ukash and will automatically convert the currency for the receiver as well as support multiple local languages.

Receivers of funds are prompted to open their own NETELLER account and withdraw via a number of flexible options including bank transfers, cheques, bank wires or through the Net + card which can be used at over 1 million ATMs and 30 million point-of-sale terminals world-wide.

Dan Starr, Executive VP NEOVIA Financial said: “The launch of NETELLER Money Transfer is NEOVIA’s official offering in the global remittance marketplace, making transfer services such as bank drafts, money orders and cheques redundant. If you’re settling up your tab with a friend round the corner or sending money to your parents or loved ones around the world, you want the money to get to them as soon as possible, safely and with minimum charges. We know how to move funds and we know how to do that quickly and securely.”

PartyGaming launches marketing push on back of US asset freeze

PartyGaming has ramped up its marketing spend to capitalise on the US authorities’ squeeze on the payment channels of US-facing poker sites PokerStars and Full Tilt.

The company made the announcement in a second-quarter trading update which revealed group revenue since April 6 remains in line with that achieved in the first quarter, despite the onset of the regular summer downswing in online gaming activity.

The marketing push on the back of US authorities’ seizure of player winnings from US-facing poker sites including Poker Stars and Full Tilt has already positively impacted player numbers in several territories, said the company.

PartyGaming said increased distribution costs associated with the initiative would be offset by continued cost savings and favourable currency movements, with full-year results expected to be in line with those achieved for the full year in 2008.

PartyGaming chief Jim Ryan said: “The Group’s strategy remains on track and I am pleased that many of the seeds we have sown over the past year are now beginning to bear fruit.”

PartyCasino was the group’s strongest performing vertical over the quarter, turning in double-digit revenue growth, on the back of a substantial increase in games offered on the platform and the launch last month of a dedicated affiliate programme and international marketing campaign.

PartyPoker revenues however dipped below first-quarter levels due to a reduction in active player days due to seasonality, continued competition from US-facing poker sites, and lower yields due to increased bonus and player loyalty costs.

The company’s online poker tournament service in Italy for land-based lottery services provider Intralot has also gone live. Party said it expects to be offering poker cash games on its newly launched Italian poker network by the end of 2009.

Today, the EPT is considered as one of the world’s most prestigious tours alongside the World Poker Tour. And with rising pots & prizes, Season 4 is looking particularly fierce.

The EPT attracts the absolute cream of card players and this year’s tour is likely to set an all-time high in EPT winnings.

Poker Tip: Pot Equity

Whenever players are ahead in a hand, they think that it’s their right to win. After a session, they’ll often report their results as follows: “I was down $200, but I really should be up $500 because of the bad beats I took.” Unfortunately, this thinking is misleading, because it fails to take into account the very real probability of losing the hand. Remember, poker is a game of giving yourself in edges, and very rarely are those edges absolutes. (But as long as you are actually giving yourself edges, you will come out ahead in the proverbial long-run)

What is Pot Equity?

Pot equity is the percentage of the pot you expect to win in the long run. If you subtract your investment in a pot from your pot equity, then pot equity becomes just another way of expressing expected value. But having many ways of thinking about expected value is helpful both for understanding it and calculating it easily.

Suppose you’re playing in a no-limit hold’em game with blinds of $1 and $2. One opponent limps, you raise to $10 with AA, and someone behind you goes all-in to $50. The blinds fold as well as the initial preflop limper. You call, and you find that your A♥A♦ is facing K♦K♠ for a $105 pot (let’s assume $2 rake, meaning that the pot is actually $103). You’ll win about 81.71% of the time and tie about .46% of the time. Your equity is (.8194)($103) = $83.90. The percentage, .8194, is obtained by taking your winning percentage and adding half of your tying percentage (because when you tie, you only get half of the pot).

Short Term Variance; Long-Term Results

Your goal is poker is to make decisions yielding a positive expected value. Another way of saying this is that you need to think of the process rather than the results, and you need to think of the process in an honest light.

If you think of your results in terms of “should haves,” you’re in the habit of overestimating your expected profit, and if you overestimate your profit, you’ll seldom reach your expectations every session, meaning that poker will be a very frustrating experience for you–one of the worst feelings in life is repeatedly failing to match expectations. Instead of thinking in terms of “should haves,” begin thinking about your poker in terms of pot equity. At the end of the day, you’ll be a much more sane, and a much more happier player, and a much more analytic player. Poker is supposed to be fun, so respect and enjoy the process!
